A green business gains its ‘greenness’ from its employees. An organization may switch to green operations but any change is obsolete until the employees of the organization don’t feel involved in it. Here, we talk about how a business can pull its employees into its quest for greenness.
Understand the Roadblocks
Environmental awareness is an important part of school curriculums today. A modern high school student is expected to know the basic elements of environmental education like sustainability and conservation. Sadly enough, this wasn’t the case twenty years back in time and this is when most of your employees attended school. No matter how educated your workforce is they did not have the opportunity to ponder upon the implications of their personal and professional being on the environment. Before you set out to transform to a green organization, it is important for you to understand and acknowledge this fact. Teaching them about environment can be as tricky as teaching a child how to count for the first time.
Involve everyone
Environment education is for everyone, beginning right from the CEO to the office boy. If you are thinking of turning into a green business without involving the corporate executives or the helping staff, you should not expect much positive change. As an instance, if you teach your staff about the Three R Strategy – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle leaving out the peons and office boys, you are making a serious mistake since these are the people who manage the office stationery and other resources. Similarly, if the president of the company was spared environmental talks, he may not even consider using natural light and putting off the extra lights in a conference room let alone sanction proposals to completely switch to renewable sources of energy.
Seek expert help
You can also arrange for a weekly environment related class to be held in the office during the lunch break or after office hours. You can easily find an activist from a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) or a college teacher willing to teach your staff about the environment.
Make environment education a part of the operations
An excellent way of spreading functional environmental education in your staff is by making it a part of the promotion process. Generally, every organization expects its employees to pass certain exams or exhibit good work before they can jump to a higher post. If you include passing a general environment related exam in the process, the staff will be forced to think about the environment. After all no one wants to miss a promotion! This has dual benefits to the organization. The first and the most obvious one being that the employees get environmentally educated. Secondly, it also ensures that only environment minded people get to the top and continue to keep the organization committed to a green operation.
Building a green business in modern times of materialism is a tough task. Having your employees on your side can make the road easier.
